  • Lunatic Fringe (Red Ryder)

  • Work has been dragging along, lately. I cannot tell you how glad I am that it is Friday! I read quite a bit of Marilyn Monroe's bio on IMDB.com. I thought these quotes struck a chord:

"People had a habit of looking at me as if I were some kind of mirror instead of a person. They didn't see me, they saw their own lewd thoughts, then they white-masked themselves by calling me the lewd one."

"The truth is I've never fooled anyone. I've let people fool themselves. They didn't bother to find out who and what I was. Instead, they would invent a character for me. I wouldn't argue with them. They were obviously loving somebody I wasn't. When they found this out, they would blame me for disillusioning them---and fooling them."

I am now on Day 30 of the Atkins diet and have lost 13 lbs. since the beginning. I am out of the Induction Phase now so I can eat more carbs, as long as it stays under my daily limit. The good news about that is I do not crave carbs like before. I really don't mind this diet at all. What wouldn't surprise me is hearing that a good cook will do better on the Atkins Diet than a kitchen-clueless, convenience food junkie. I have years to go before I say that I am any good at cooking but I am not bad at it either. One can save money on this diet as well.

Last Saturday, I was watching my favorite channel (PBS) which featured "Visions of England." I have never seen England appear more beautiful and compelling. I wanted to hop on my computer and play the Sims so I could attempt to replicate their beautiful gardens and distinct architecture. They are doing their telethon thang right now so that means their best programming is on. Why? Because you "vote" for what you like best by calling in a donation. This tells them what programming the people are interesting in keeping. That is a fantastic system, by the way. Earlier this year, I chose to support Washington Week but I was so poor at the time that I could only give $20.00. I am wealthier right now so I bought the DVD for $90.00. If anyone is a fan of PBS, please make a donation. They are short of their goal. When I donate, I do not think of intellectuals in brown tweed jackets smoking a pipe while watching Masterpiece Theatre. Rather, I picture an indigent child in a chaotic, excruciatingly negative home watching Sesame Street or Mr. Rogers, learning about love. Another scenario is the depressed and unemployed enriched by education, positive programming. That's not hogwash by the way! I've started many Saturdays depressed and lonely, only to feel optimistic and energetic from watching their self-help or DIY programs. I am really looking forward to watching the DVD. I turned the program off as soon as I knew it would belong to me!

This week I finished Joseph Conrad's novella, "Heart of Darkness." In case you didn't know, it inspired the movie, "Apocalypse Now." The movie was quite different from the book but I suppose the meaning is the same, more or less.
