  • Amy, my brother and I went to see the original Metropolis film Saturday night. Since it is a silent film, there were several moments without music. In those moments there was ta da ~ silence, discounting the whirring of the fans and the jangling of their pull cords. Every scratch, cough and suppressed giggle I made amplified in the tiny theatre. Then my brother started snoring so I had to jab him. The movie dragged in a couple of places and was longer than I expected it to be but the effects and plot were astounding. How could someone make a film like that in 1927?! Speaking of, I started watching Birth of a Nation yesterday but I resolved to continue it this evening. That movie came out in 1915 and looked like it came out in 1915. Hard to imagine my great-grandparents were in their mid-twenties when it was made and could probably recall it if they were alive. My mother told me that my g-grandmother told her of the time her town first saw a car and how frightened some people were. So Metropolis must have really knocked some socks off.

Now my AFI Top 100 Movie count is 90/100.

I've been shopping online for a good travel package to visit London. Time is running out for the best deals. I think I might actually pick up a second job. I'm in the market to buy a house but I also want money to take trips.

Today, January 6, 2003, is the day I quit smoking. It is almost 5pm and I have not smoked yet. The tricky part will be avoiding cigarettes at home. Grandma says I'm her hero.
