  • Don't Come Around Here (Tom Petty)

  • These past two days have run roughshod on me, despite the 3-day weekend. Battling the insultingly cold weather, my dad & I made four trips to the auto parts store only to find out that my car is dying. It's got an incurable oil leak and today, I have this awful back-ache! When a cheaply made car is eight years old, its owner knows and prepares herself for the eventuality that the luxury of having no car payment can be fleeting. I did get 2 good years after paying off my loan. I truly hate the idea of starting a new loan. I'm not interested in getting anything too nice really but I haven't a clue what I want. At least my vehicle is still driveable. It's only a matter of time before oil flying around the engine damages something. One good thing came out of it, however. My uncle Warren gave me his chili recipe! One of our (brothers & cousins) favorite memories is when Warren entered a chili cook-off downtown at the circle. My dad took my brothers and me and met them down there. My dad was always one for going to city events. The fact that his brother was in a city-sponsored outdoor contest involving beer and chili, well, he was all over that. I always think to myself that half my life was led before I turned 10. The rest is just slowly unfolding. At this moment, I'm waiting for Amy to come over but I am also waiting for Warren's Famous Chili to be ready. We're going to watch the American Idol try-outs and then the President's State of the Union Address. I will report back on the chili. I really wish I had bought some beer. Shoot!
OK, Amy stopped for beer on her way over so we were not found wanting. The chili was superb.

I thought it would be fun to share a really weird company memo that a friend forwarded to me. By the way, my employer and all of their communications will always be strictly off limits. Since I don't work for these people, here you go:

    Subject: Carpet Care Reminder

Since the installation of our new carpet, we appear to be doing a good job of avoiding spills and stains. Hopefully everyone is mindful to keep lids on cups during transport and to pour out unconsumed drinks in the kitchen rather than leaving them in the trash cans.

One area we need to work on is picking up dropped staples - especially around the copy machine. These quickly become embedded in the carpet if left on the floor, so I want to ask for your help and cooperation. Please use care when removing staples to avoid dropping them. If dropped, it only takes a second to pick them up before they get crushed into the carpet fibers. This will help us keep our new area looking great for a long time to come. Thanks much!

    Jim
