Even though Hurricane Isabel produced nothing but some cloud swirls in my immediate area, I am feelings the effects. I'll be on-call Saturday so I know I am going to hate life if my phone rings prior to 8 am.
My brother's wedding went very well. He & his new wife are on their honeymoon in Jamaica for the next two weeks. I miss him already. When I first heard he was marrying, I had some concerns. After all, he is young and they had been together just a year. I changed my mind when I realized the positive effect she has had on my brother. He joyfully stays home to be with her. She is very kind. I love nice people. He is really devoted to her, something I have not seen out of him before. Coincidentally, they were both born on the same day, just minutes apart. My parents also share the same birthday so it's really weird when you consider that. I am glad to get a new sister-in-law. I always regretted not having a sister. My aunt and uncle used to live across the lane from us so my cousin Jennifer was the closest thing to a sister I ever had. As a matter of fact, Jennifer is coming over tonight.
Word to the wise... Do not attend your future sister-in-law's bachelorette soirée unless you want to find out TOO MUCH INFORMATION regarding your brother's sex life. I nearly choked when I heard her say my brother's favorite position. Speaking of, I found my diary last night which details my life from the age of 19 to present. I had not read back through it in a couple of years. Half the time, I was trying to read quickly through the embarrassing parts. I'm sure my face was bright red.
Last night, I forced myself to sit down and finish "The Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison. It took a long time to read but it was worth it. Remember how people wondered what was inside the briefcase of Marcellus Wallace in, "Pulp Fiction"? I cannot say that I now know but I think I might have an idea. "Invisible Man" was said to have instigated, for its part, the civil rights movement of the 1960s. In Ellison's novel, the nameless hero has a briefcase for which he risks life and limb to to retain possession. He is even pursued by white men determined to know what is inside. This all occurs at the end of the book. I don't want to say more but it might be enlightening to some devoted fans of the film. However, there is absolutely nothing supernatural about it so if that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere.
My next novel off the list will be John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath." Since the film was on the AFI list, I have already seen it and know more or less what is going to happen. I have always enjoyed Steinbeck but I do not necessarily feel like starting a 500-page book again. However, I have no choice because it is the only one on the list that I have in my possession. After this, I will need to return to the bookstore and buy more.
