  • Orange Crush (REM)

  • Being a creature of habit, I frequently encounter the same employees who work at my grocery store, video store and gas station. I buy the same things and look the same way nearly every time I visit. However, it is embarrassing when one of them makes a remark that indicates they have spent time considering my purchases and the timing of them. Here are a few of my favorite moments:

My favorite pizza place keeps track of what you order for convenience. One night, I called up and said,
Me: "Hi, I'd like a pizza for delivery."
Pizza Man: "Are you getting a small 'blah blah blah'?"
    Me: "Yes..."
Pizza Man: "Friday night at home alone again?"

My favorite video store has a clerk who obviously works there because he loves the films more than the pay. He usually makes a comment about whatever I rent since I frequently rent old classics (especially when I was working off the list.) I feel slightly judged once I've been handed back my videos. Last night, he changed up his pace so I was completely unprepared when he said:

    Video Man: "XXXXX?"
    Me: Pardon?
Video Man: "XXXXX? Is that how it is pronounced?"
Me: "Oh right! Sorry, I am not used to hearing it because I am not called by my first name." (Now I was trying not to ramble!)
Video Man: "It's an interesting name."
Me: "Umm... yes. It's a family name but thank you."

I was so surprised that he called me by first name that I didn't even understand him at first. At least he didn't seem to think I had stolen someone else's video card. On my way to the car I considered whether or not it was rude that I did not tell him what name people did use with me. Then I started thinking about Robin Williams in "One Hour Photo" and decided it was just as well.
