Chapter 10

Zoot and his Wish

"Put me down!!!!" Zoot yelled at Eric. But Eric was quite amused now that the tables were turned.

"Don't think so, shorty!" Eric told his little captive. "Actually, I'd like to know exactly what your wish is and why you started this whole thing."

"Not telling, you big bully-boy!"

"FINE! Then you'll just stay in my pocket for awhile." Eric said and gently stuffed the angry Xuptilian into his shirt pocket.

Muffled noises came from his pocket after a few moments and Eric removed the strange little creature and once again, held Zoot in the palm of his hand.

"OK, OK, OK, I'll tell you my wish, but promise you won't laugh at me. I know you can make it come true...."

"So! Tell me your wish Zoot."

"Well, er, ah...." Zoot stammered, "well, i want you to make me larger. I know you can. I want to be as big as everyone else. Will you do it?"

"Make you bigger?" Eric was puzzled, "how would I do that?"

"I don't know the mechanics of what you do, I just know that you can make things bigger with those glass eyes you make."

"Glass eyes? Do you mean these "Eye Glasses"?" Eric took his glasses out of their case and showed them to Zoot.

"Yeah. Look right now, YOU are smaller than you were a minute ago. Now make me bigger!"

"I'm not any smaller," Eric put the glasses up to his face, "see, I only appeared smaller because you were looking through my glasses the wrong way round. Glasses don't make a person bigger or smaller, they just help a person with damaged eyes see things at their proper size and with a proper focus."

"Oh" was all that Zoot could say. And then his tiny body started to shake...and he began to cry. It was really quite pathetic to witness.

"You are one sad little being," Eric started.

"Couldn't you.....please......oh, please.....couldn'.... couldn't you make everyone else wear those things so I would be larger?" Zoot stammered.

"Well, no, actually not," Eric answered, "but here's a thought, how about if I make YOU a pair of special glasses, so that everyone appears to be your size?"

Zoot looked up at Eric with swollen, tear-filled eyes. He was a long ways from the arrogant abductor he had started out as.

"Well, I can do that for you. What do you say?" Eric asked.

"Yu...you...you would? You would do that for me? After all the trouble I've caused?"

"Yes. But you have to get me back to London. Susie must be in quite a state of worry by this time. You have to get me back NOW!"

"Ok. We'll go right now. I'll lead you to the Portal."

Eric looked back as they prepared to launch into the Portal. It was a beautiful place. He thought maybe he'd return someday, under different circumstances, of course.

A young woman stood by the portal. She had a most friendly smile and greetedEric and Zoot with an enthusiastic welcome to the Portal.

Eric and Zoot stepped into the Portal. As they passed through dimensional space they could still hear the voice of one one of the rescue party. But, alas, they did not know what the voice was or what it was saying. It was just a voice lost between dimensions, echoing endlessly in lost space, not making any sense.

Nano was also fading and changing as the two hurtled towards London in present day. The land of double rainbows appeared "pixelated" and then faded altogether, as Zoot and Eric reappeared in London.

"This isn't the Museum! Where have you taken me?" demanded Eric.

"I'm sorry. I don't know. The Portal sometimes shifts. I've no idea of where we are."

Eric looked around and quickly figured out that he was in the middle of Regent's Park. He could see the London Zoo just across the grassy fields. A runner was coming up fast from one side.

"Where the hell did you come from?" the runner said in a thick American accent.

"Oh, didn't see you there. Sorry." Eric said, stepping out of the way of the runner, a tall, bearded man with glasses.

"Ok Zoot. I know where we are, Jeannette lives not far from here...you'd better stay in my pocket for awhile.....we've got a little walk ahead of us." Eric said to Zoot as he walked off towards the Zoo.

A long ways off, in another dimension, Susie, Jeannette, Moto and Kozo and the others were heading towards a different Portal, still trying to find Eric in Nano.
