Lt. Mauro Renato Leo Ciccarelli, US Navy, WWII (b.1922, d.1971)
We're still piecing together his military service record, but this is what we know so far: He was a pre-law student attending Villanova University just before war was declared. He signed up for the Naval Reserve, attended Officer Training School and during his active duty was promoted to Lieutenant. He was commander of a ship that sailed the Mediterranean and transported soldiers to various fields of battle. Because of his legal background, he also did a stint as a defender in Court Martial cases. He was an active member of the Naval Reserves until 1957 and a member of various officer's clubs around the country and world. More details will come as we sort through the clues given in his letters home to his "folks" during the war.
Lilio "Leo" Ciccarelli, Private, US Army, WWI, at Camp Lafayette (b. 1894, d. 1980)
I don't believe that my grandfather saw any action during World War I. From what I've gathered, he was in basic training and then possibly assigned to Camp Lafayette when the war ended. He was honorably discharged at the end of the war, just prior to his marriage to Nicoletta Cianto in 1919. She was under age 21 so needed her father's signature as her legal guardian to enable her to get married.
