Ani DiFranco
Aah, Ani. She also gives me hope for women everywhere. She is also amazing to watch in concert (I've seen her at First Avenue, and also on tour with Bob Dylan in some baseball field).

I think what I admire most about her is that she has managed to be successful in the music world without compromising herself to a record label (she started her own). She's incredibly open about her sexual preferences, and while I don't consider that a big deal, I know that she's a real source of strength for people who deal with their own 'coming out' drawbacks.

Here is a link to my store, where I have a listing to buy any of her albums. Her music is beautiful, and her collaboration with Utah Phillips is impressive to everyone I've heard talk about it, including people who think Ani DiFranco is a whining man-hating bitch.(??!!)

There are so many pages dedicated to her [the 'goddess' for pre-pubescent boys and girls everywhere (YAY to good taste!)] that I won't even try to compete, I'll just put some snazzy pictures of her up here (more for my own benefit) and then point you to the fan(atic)s...

"Ever since I was eighteen, I've worked overtime to look goofy and freaky - which is a step up from pretty. I think about beauty and who decides what we should look like. A lot of the content of beauty is about playing along." ~NOW Magazine, March 1995

Leslie Ball

A little bit closer to home... for just $5 you can watch Leslie Ball, host of Ball's Cabaret, and a bunch of other people sing, dance, share (sometimes me!)...but it's Leslie that I admire.

Always a delight to watch, she gives me hope for people. The first time I went to Balls, they were celebrating her birthday. Not only was she happy to be getting older (a rare thing for women), she had cultivated such a love for life in herself and those close to her that (even though I didn't know her) I was happy to be part of the celebration. It isn't often that you run into a person in your own life who inspires you. I'd have to say that she does that for me (and probably a lot of others) through what I've seen at Balls and what I've heard from my friends who go to her (specifically sober environment) high school.

If you ever get a chance (if you're in the Minneapolis area, bored, around midnight, and sober ) check out her Cabaret at the Southern Theater. (Be ready for good pizza afterwards, too, where you can laugh at all the drunk people trying to have fun...)
