Documenting
the Exquisite Square project
October, 1997-January, 2000
Exquisite Square was based on the surrealist game Exquisite Corpse, where three people each worked on one part of a drawing without being able to see what the other participants had already done. The results were absurd and fascinating, with chance leaving room for interesting juxtapositions and coincidences. For the Exquisite Square project, Participants were asked to submit a 1.5 in x 1.5 in (4 cm x 4 cm) square piece of artwork. Boxes were arranged in a 5 x 5 grid in the order of their arrival. The rules changed at some point during the project because some participants felt compelled to submit large numbers of squares (see #7 & 8), which takes all the chance out of the game, so I had to restrict the number of entries to one per mailing. |
