Title: Statues/Amusement
Format: 7" (45 RPM)
Date Recorded: Oct 1980
Date Released: Jan 1981

Notes: Statues - produced by Husker Du and Colin Mansfield.

Highly collectible and priced accordingly. An article
in the Sep 1992 Record Collector identifies this
as "Reflex 38285," asserts that only 1000 were pressed
and mentions a lyric sheet insert (although none
are known). The magazine was probably confusing this
with 'In a Free Land' (NAR-010) the Hüskers following
7" which, in a very few cases, did include a lyric insert.
The sleeve is a double sided, gatefold wraparound.

Trivia: 'Do the body strut' and 'Shut up and kill yourself'
                   etched in run-off grooves.

Pressing: Earliest pressings, which included a lyric sheet,
are of greatest interest to collectors, but later
pressings without the lyric sheet are also worth
seeking. Rumour has it that the master for this
record has been lost. Two pressings of 5000 each.

Trivia: 'Barefoot and pregnant' and 'Kitten' etched
                   in run-off grooves.

Title: Voice of Reason
Format: 12" LP
Date Recorded: Feb Jan 1983 (Blackberry Way, MPLS)
Date Released: 1983

Notes: Produced by Steve Fjelstad, Rifle Sport and
Terry Katzman - 'special thanks' to Bob Mould.
Came with B&W fold-out lyric sheet.

'Rifle Sport are central members of Minneapolis/
St. Paul's "third wave." After the Suicide Commandos/
Suburbs in the mid-'70s, and the Hüskers/Replacements
at the beginning of the '80s, along came bands like
Soul Asylum, Man Sized Action and Otto's Chemical Lounge.
These combos bloomed roughly around the time of the
worldwide hardcore explosion, but none of them were
the least bit doctrinaire. Rifle Sport drew on some of
the "post-punk" Angloisms that colored the sound of
certain Chicago groups emerging in the same period,
and the band has always valued structural tension
                   over compositional speed.

Artist: Man Sized Action
Title: Claustrophobia
Format: 12" LP
Date Recorded: Feb 1983 (Blackberry Way, MPLS)
Date Released: 1983

Notes: Man Sized Action evolved out of a group of early,
hard-core Hüsker Dü fans known as the 'Veggies'.
This explains the publishing credit to 'Vegi Music'
On the reverse of the sleeve.

'To be the coolest band in Minneapolis nowadays you
need a little more vision and talent than the gallant
Man Sized Action could muster. But to be a cool band
anywhere, all you need is this unpretentious lot's
commitment to a few good ideas. Man Sized Action opened
up punk structures with distorted, ringing guitar, some
off-kilter rhythms and emotionally sung lyrics. Like
Hüsker Dü, they applied a Neanderthal, propulsive attack
                   to fundamentally poppy songs.
