One of rumours floating around the reason why Ditko disappeared from New York during
the end of 1954 and almost all of 1955 (only 3 pgs of work is credited to Ditko during
this time) is that his horror work on THE THING! was used during this period to
discredit comic-books, as it pertains to the whole Senate hearings and Dr. Wertham
period of labeling comics as a corrupting influence on children. This worm cover is
considered one of Ditko's classics from his career.
