''Reading Between The Lines''
Machine Man is back, so please, please stop sending us those mountains of mail that have
been inundating our offices ever since the human robot made his last appearance.
Machine Man is back, with an all-new creative team. Marvelous Marv Wolfman plies his
skills on the script and editing end of things, while we welcome back one of the all-time
greats in the comic field, especially at Marvel -- Sturdy STEVE DITKO, the man who gave that
certain something to all those fondly remembered issues of SPIDER-MAN when Spidey just made
his splash onto the comics scene. We're proud as anything to have Steve back, and since this
letters page is being written after the inks of this issue were handed back to us, we can
definitely say the man is better than ever.
Yes, this is the book that marked Ditko's return
to Marvel after a many years absent. Jack Kirby created Machine Man, one of the most
internally-conflicted individuals in comics history. The angst with which Kirby filled the
character was its stamp. This story took place after the classic confrontation between
Machine Man and the Hulk in Incredible Hulk #235-237. Wolfman and Ditko changed the
book and, not surprisingly given Ditko's influence, Issue #10 marked the debut of Senator
Brickman, the man determined to bring down Machine Man; not matter how much good M.M. stood
for, including saving Brickman's life in this issue. Ditko's run would last until Issue #19,
which would feature the first-ever appearance of the Jack O' Lantern, whom would later
become 'Holgoblin II'. If you have any stories or articles concerning Ditko's take on the Machine Man,
please E-MAIL me.
