Comic Book Artist #2 interview by Jon B. Cooke, Summer '98 |
JIM : I was reading them back when they were monster books : ''Fin Fang Foom,'' this dragon running around with a pair of swim shorts on.
CBA : Did you recognize Kirby's style at the time?
JIM : Yeah, he was always my favorite, him and Ditko. They were the foundations of what I was going to become as a cartoonist. I became aware of them before any other comic artists.
CBA : Who's your greater influence : Kirby or Ditko?
JIM : That's a tough one, because so much of what I got from Ditko was his head. Steve had a style that was completely different than anybody else in the industry. Spider-Man and Dr. Strange are completely divorced from the rest of the Marvel Universe in so many ways, just because of his influence on them. Compositionally, I was more influenced by Kirby, but the spirit was more Ditko.
