The duties of Nurses during the Civil War included changing dressings, dispensing medicine, washing patients, and cooking the patient’s food. She would also read, sing,, write letters, and even prayed for them. Clara Barton, the “Angel of the Battlefield,” traveled to battlefields in her own wagon stocked with medical supplies. Most nurses were only allowed to serve in general hospitals. Miss Barton was one of the few who tended soldiers in the field. Social reformer Dorothea Dix volunteered to organize nursing services for the Union army. She had very strict rules for her nurses, including that they be over thirty, dress in black or brown, and not have curled hair. (National Library of Medicine)
