THEATER

National Theater. Santa Ana's gorgeous wood theater was begun in 1902, and still recalls the city's heyday at the turn
of the century, when coffee export taxes were earmarked for its construction.
A set of grand wooden stairs leads to the inside of the theater, whick is being refurbished but is still an impressive
example of what can be done with quality woods and a whole lot of taste. Stylized tiles line a foyer withy maroon
wooden columns supporting a ceiling painted in pastel blue and rose. The theater itself is also maroon, with three
terraces and balconies. Notice that wooden railing on the third terrace and the ceiling painting of Mozart, Beethoven,
Strauss and Tchaikivsky. Below the stage, three basins of water create an echo that allows actors' voices to resonate.
During town festivals, the theater usually hosts art exhibitions. Performances and cultural events are also held
occasionally; check with the desk for a schedule.
