My Soap-Operatic Life
"A hick town is one in which there is no place to go where you shouldn't be." Alexander Woollcott.
Since there are things that I'll probably mention in here that relate to certain things & places in Livermore and Davis, I thought I'd put a list of them in for people who aren't familiar with these areas. This is another area that may be updated or changed from time to time- especially since this is only a partial list of what came off of the top of my head at the moment.
Livermore-esque Terms:
- Alameda County Fair:
- The local fair (in Pleasanton). For two weeks of summer pretty much everyone winds up here.
- Basset Books:
- A now-defunct bookstore that some guys I dated hung out at with the rest of their crowd until it moved to Berkeley. I refer to that crowd as the "Bassets crowd" from time to time. Now they have nowhere to go but to Lyon's.
- East Avenue Middle School:
- When my generation was in middle school, this was the stuck-up kids's school. But since their math program and their teachers all went to hell (long, dull story) it's now the school that you don't want to send your kids to.
- Emil Villa's:
- A restaurant in town, where there always is people that I know that I don't want to see. It's like Lucky's in that way.
- Granada High School (GHS):
- The rival high school. It's famous for its "block schedule"- kids have 3 1 1/2 hour classes a day for a semester. Also rumored to be the "gang" school. But since half my friends went there, I shouldn't say anymore about it.
- Las Positas College (LPC):
- The local junior college, nicknamed stuff like "Lost Potential" and "UCBC" (University of California Behind Costco). This is where the large slacker population of Livermore attends after graduation. And never leaves. I know of one person that has graduated from there. NOBODY gets out in two years (that I know of, anyway). The smart kids in Livermore laugh whenever they're told to go to Las Positas after college. The general feeling is that "God, if I went to Las Positas it'd be just like high school- same old people." I've had friends go there too.
- Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL):
- A.k.a. "The Lab." Known for the weird stuff they do with nukes and for finding dinosaur bones. There's a lot of weird people ("labbies")that work there, and I'm friends with all of their weird kids ("lab brats"). This is one of the three things that anyone ever hears of in Livermore.
- Livermore High School (LHS):
- My high school. Known for it's drama department, math department, and huge FFA membership. I could go on for ages about here, but I won't.
- Livermore Rodeo:
- One of the other things people hear of in Livermore- yes, it's another cow town. I went once and was very bored.
- Lucky's:
- Ever heard that country song, "All My Ex's Live in Texas"? Well, "All My Ex-Friends Work At Lucky's." And I always run into Janelle there. Oh joy.
- Lyons:
- The parking lot of Lyons is where the Bassets crowd now hangs out. Some strange stuff happens back there . . . for instance, the dumpster incident.
- Mendenhall Middle School:
- A.k.a. "Mental Hell." My middle school- full of weirdoes. The principal before the current one was arrested for shoplifting. Geez, the world's filled with nuts.
- Pleasanton:
- A neighboring town.
- Sandia:
- The "other lab," the one that MY relatives work(ed) at.
- Stoneridge Mall:
- In Pleasanton.
- Wente Vineyards:
- The other thing that Livermore is known for- the vineyards. They also have a restaurant, which is extremely expensive and serves very little food.
Davis-esque Terms:
- Arlington:
- Apartments, where Elena lives.
- Bicycles:
- One of the town's obsessions. The one town in America where if you say you don't have a bike they look at you as if you've just admitted to killing twenty-seven people yesterday. Being a rebel, I don't have a bike.
- Cafe Espresso Roma:
- A big hangout in Davis, basically a study joint with some food available. I go here for workshop meetings a lot.
- California Aggie:
- The school newspaper, which I want to work for someday.
- Castilian:
- One of the Cuarto buildings, my home this year.
- Coffeehouse:
- One of the school hangouts (on campus).
- Cows:
- The other obsession in Davis. On certain nights you can smell the odors . . . but not as much as people who don't live in Davis will tell you.
- Cuarto:
- My area of dorm buildings. This area is a block or two off-campus and consists of suites. This room is more like my old Webster room.
- DC:
- Dining commons/dining hall- not my favorite place to go.
- Drake:
- Apartment complex where Melissa, Bill, Yamara/Marianne, Briana and her roommate live. Remington lives on this street, but not the complex.
- Emerson:
- One of the Cuarto buildings, my home this summer.
- Experimental College:
- Offers strange classes for a fee. It's pretty cool.
- Fistulated cow:
- A famous Davis attraction for most Picnic Days, it's a cow with a hole cut in its stomach so people can stick their hands in. EEEEEEEW!
- Greystone:
- Ritzy townhouses on the far side of town, where Mike, Evan, Adrian, and Michelle now live.
- IRC:
- The school has an IRC channel, which many from ucd.life go on. Including me, Remington, Matt, and Yamara.
- Kappa Omicron Nu:
- NOT a sorority...it's the home-ec-esque honor society that I'm in.
- LU-GoD:
- Linux Users Group of Davis. Club Remington's in, and brings me along to. See the site for further info on it.
- Newsgroup:
- See ucd.life
- Picnic Day:
- Davis Open House/Alumni Day, the third Saturday in April every year.
- Primero Grove:
- Currently being constructed, this area will be the school's apartments next year (the next transfer area). I wanna move in here!
- Regan:
- Another area of dorm buildings, the closest (and pretty old) ones to campus, Lillian moved over here, Jessica lives over here. I lived in here for summer orientation.
- RSVP:
- The phone system that we call into to get grades, sign up for classes, etc. It's a pain in the ass to use.
- Rumsey:
- Where Remington's house is. A tiny town with two buildings, out in the boonies. About an hour away from Davis. Cute but frigid and pest-infested house next to a river. He refers to the house as "Rumsey", now I picked it up.
- seele:
- (pronounced say-la, it's German for soul) The undergraduate literary magazine at UCD, I work for it.
- Segundo:
- Another area of dorm buildings, nearby Regan. 4 five-story buildings. Mike lived over here.
- Silo:
- Another campus hangout, the one I go to the most.
- Social Sciences & Humanities:
- A.k.a. the "Death Star", it's a very strangely-constructed building.
- Sudwerk:
- The hangout of the IRC people- a restaurant/bar.
- Suite:
- What the Cuarto area is made up of, it's 2-4 bedrooms, 1-2 bathrooms, and a living room. This is what I live in instead of one dorm room. =)
- Sycamore Lane:
- The complex where Sarah lived
- Tercero:
- Another area of dorm buildings. Built right in front of the cow pasture. I did not want to live over here. Supposedly the food's the best here, but how can you eat with the smell?
- Thoreau:
- One of the Cuarto buildings, has 8-9 people in each suite. The area offices are here, and Meay lived over here.
- ucd.life:
- A UCD newsgroup that I post on. See the accompanying web site for more details.
- University Mall (U Mall):
- The dinky mall across from Cuarto area, has a grocery store, Rite Aid, bookstore, restaurant, and fabric store. Subway, Wherehouse, and Clothestime are also near here.
- Webster:
- My old building (in Cuarto), which is being rebuilt this year. And believe me, it needs it.
- Whole Earth Festival:
- The other big event in Davis during the spring, a.k.a. "Davis Hippie Day", or "Davis Turns Into Berkeley Day."
