1951 Clark County Sheriff's Office
Pictured here are left to right, Sheriff Glen Jones, Investigators Ralph Lamb, Lloyd Bell, Bill Payton and Chief Criminal Deputy A. H. Kennedy. These men proved to be strong law enforcement leaders.
Ralph Lamb was appointed Sheriff in 1961 to finish the term of Butch Leypoldt who had been appointed to the Gaming Control Board by Governor Grant Sawyer. Lamb served as Sheriff for 17 years before being defeated by his Narcotics Commander John McCarthy.
Lloyd Bell eventually became the Undersheriff to Sheriff Ralph Lamb and served in that capacity for more than a decade.
Little has been found about Investigator Bill Payton. Any information that you may have would be very welcome.
Alexander H. Kennedy left the Clark County Sheriff's Office to become the Chief of Detectives for the Las Vegas Police Department not long after this picture was taken. On January 18, 1952, he was appointed as Chief of Police following the resignation of Chief Jack Maxwell. A year later, the Las Vegas City Manager resigned, and Kennedy was appointed to take his place as acting City Manager. When a new City Manager was appointed, Kennedy returned to his former position as Chief of Police. In 1955, he was again appointed as the City Manager but this time on a permanent basis. He served in that capacity for five years.
