Thunder Bay
No thunder in February
Snow rules the season

Rounded, worn old mountains
Still guard the shore
Pine and birch spikes on top

City lights spread out below
as I ride the ski lift in
bitter cold breeze off Superior

Here, north of Grand Marais
an imaginary limit until we cross the border
and expand our horizons
from Lutsen to this outpost

Later the band rides on-
Bus to International Falls in winter
an adventure to think twice about-
many empty miles of snow and trees

a storm rolls across from Alberta
through Winnipeg and north
of Lake Of the Woods where an unseen push
from a high pressure area could place us
in its path, as we listen to radio news
 of its progress

Lonely road, wolves in the woods
Narrow lifeline ribbon tying
us to civilization
Pray storm stays away
