FLIGHT

Her son left home again today.
He spread his wings and flew away
On a sleek and silver jet that
Became a speck in the blue sky
Seconds after it lifted
From familiar ground.

He will come back soon,
Yet not soon enough
To hide from her searching eyes
The changes Time always works
While he is gone.

When he returns, she will stand here,
Watching strange faces,
Until his smile catches her eye.
He will come forward, slowly,
To bend his head and kiss her cheek.
In these few moments,
She will not know him.
