THE IRON HORSE IS FREE

No longer can they hope to hear
That mournful whistle blow,
Nor wave to the smiling engineer
As they did long ago...
Gone is the famous pioneer
That helped their country grow.

No longer can they hope to feel
The rumble on the ground,
Nor count the swaying cars of steel
That passed them homeward bound...
Gone is the song of every wheel
And that rhythmical sound.

No longer can they hope to see
The smile fly high and wide,
Nor from some tiny station flee
A steaming engine side...
The mighty iron horse is free
And they will miss the ride.
