The Heart is Deeper than Words

(February 3, 2002)

The heart is deeper than words.
Yet, it cannot be figured
By foreign, staring eyes.

The heart needs not to speak
When the orchard is dull
And when the sky is grim -
It just listens, in dismay.

The heart cannot hide in bad weather
When the street needs to be crossed,
When the letter needs to be posted.

The heart’s voice is selective;
It speaks to worthy listeners.
When the heart is silent,
Do not put words into its mouth.

When the heart speaks,
It is honest and genuine -
Even if its expressions are culture-bound,
Mentality-bound.

It is better to misread a voluble heart
Than to misinterpret a silent one
Because the former is communicative, light of spirit,
While the latter is sensitive and easily hurt.
