Narcissus and Woodland Soil
The woodland bed for April's river-god, sienna-rich and ruled by bulbous pith, she gave him strength to split the shady sod, sustain the thirsty self-absorbed, and with each spurt of growth that came, he idly bowed above the reservoir. And like the myth, he fell in love. His leaning uproots vowed to stay although it cost him nourishment. Reflections will mock everything. So proud to see his second face, he was content to leave his bed of loyal soil and grass. He fell and left a hole in her, was spent and died above the silver looking glass. Today, the river looks like tarnished brass. ©2002 Peggy Putnam Owen |
