ONE:
There was a new song on the stereo
as the light flashed down from red to green.
White, with bells and whistles,
the newest car I'd ever seen.
Life was running smoothly,
things were right on time.
For a simple cup of coffee,
I could afford to drop a dime.
The plan to hit the bookstore
for a tome that I would like
was quickly turned to ashes
as that day became a night.
REFRAIN:
Rain fell from a clear blue sky
it struck us like a hammer.
Tears poured from the sun that day,
and made the masses stammer.
All their hopes and all their dreams,
the life they all had known,
with screams and terror turned to dust
the blue birds all had flown.
The king was mad, the princes too,
the talking heads all cried.
Before our eyes, the sky kept falling.
Today all dreams had died.
TWO:
No words, no numbing for the pain,
no waking from this dream.
For days, just plastered to the tube
to watch the children scream.
No hopes to return to,
we all slept on the sofa.
Not a movie, not a show,
no special shown by Oprah.
Some thief had stole our innocence,
these brigands of the day.
A monster casting shadows,
where we as children play.
REFRAIN
THREE:
We all can love the heroes,
who walked into the night.
Alas, they could not win the day,
they could not make it right.
So many tried to do their part,
their lives to give one drop.
So many lost, so many lost.
Oh, make the fires stop.
The King and Queen, they did their part,
to find the dragons' nest.
The Knights and archers all rode out,
upon their vengeful quest.
REFRAIN
FOUR:
With hands worn raw, we dig and dig,
go find our freedom's heart.
What hope, what dreams do we have left?
Pleas tell us where to start.
Amidst the rubble and the ash,
what loves have burned away?
The horror of this single morn,
no poet can portray.
Give us something, anything.
Lord, keep us safe and warm.
Guide us through this darkest hour
and keep us safe from harm.
REFRAIN
silence
REFRAIN.
