TORQUE SPECS
                                             small block                    big block
Cylinder Head Bolts                  65-ft.lbs                        80-ft.lbs
Main Bearing Cap                     80-ft.lbs                       110-ft.lbs
Rod Bearing Cap                      45-ft.lbs                         50-ft.lbs
Intake Manifold Bolts               30-ft.lbs                         30-ft.lbs
Exhaust Manifold Bolts             30-ft.lbs                         30-ft.lbs
Harmonic Balancer Bolt            65-ft.lbs                         85-ft.lbs
Oil Pump Bolt                          65-ft.lbs                         65-ft.lbs
Camshaft Bolts                         20-ft.lbs                         20-ft.lbs
NOTE: These torque specs are with clean lightly oiled threads. The reason torque specs are important is because overtorquing causes stripped threads and under torquing causes loose bolts.Aluminum and stainless parts require different specs.

CRANKSHAFT&BLOCK
                                             small block                     big block
crank end-play                         .003-.007                     .006-.010
max block taper limit                    .001                             .001
max. journal out of round             .001                             .001
main bearing oil clearance         .0015-.003                    .002-.003
rod bearing oil clearance          .0015-.0025                  .0015-.003
rod end-play                             .008-.015                     .015-.025
NOTE:  These figures are for mostly stock type rebuilds. On a high performance application stay on the high end of these specs, but dont go overboard as this causes excess oil splash in the crankcase,  and drops the oil pressure.

                                 PISTONS&RINGS
                                                        SMALL BLOCK                         BIG BLOCK

Piston to bore clearance            .0007-.0017                                   .003-.004
service limit                                 .0027                                            .005
piston ring end-gap  top              .010-.020                                     .010-.020
second ring                                .010-.025                                     .010-.025
oil-control                                  .015-.055                                     .015-.055
NOTE:  These specs are for standard cast pistons. Forged racing pistons require
more clearance to allow for expansion.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Compression test -  125lbs. minimum per cylinder. (varies by application) No more than 10% variation between cylinders.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oil Pressure (hot)   idle 15lbs. minimum, then 10 lbs. per 1000rpm minimum beyond that up to a max of about 60lbs.
NOTE: The oil pressure is always higher when it is cold, check oil pressure hot. WARNING: Never race a cold engine.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ideal Water Temp -         small block 180-190                     big block 190-200.
NOTE: Running an engine too cold reduces engine efficiency, running too hot (over 210) can cause serious engine damage.
