I looked at this page and realised I sounded really dumb and really immature. Well, that makes sense seeing as how I wrote most of these two years ago. I might eventually have some worthwhile thoughts to contribute about particular issues of merit, but for now, you must deal with inane blabber.
*There is a very profound quotation I received in one of my classes. "Whiteness is an ethnicity that attempts to hide it is an ethnicity." Now, this has me thinking quite a bit. Firstly, to deny that "white" people have cultures just as "ethnic" peoples do is wrong. And for "white" people to speak of "ethnic" people in a derogitory and submissive role is wrong, after all, they're ethnic too. Ethnicity is not defined as being different than "white".
In relation to race, I have another problem. Why is it that people who insult white people on the basis of their being white, something they can't control (just like people of color can't control what color they're born) is not considered racist, but insults to people of color are? If "white" people are ethnic, and human, are they not a race as well? So hating them on the basis of their race is just as racist as a "white" person hating a "colored" person on the basis of race.
The reason I've been thinking about this is I read an article in my critical theory english class that has two women projecting the very important message in feminism that there is no such thing as the "woman's voice" because that implies that all voices are the same, and all struggles the same. Which is untrue. However, the thing that upset me was that the Hispanic writer discussed how HIspanas know all about "white" women's experience but white women know nothing about the Hispana experience. The only problem with this article is that she makes wide sweeping statements about "white" people that if were made about "colored" people would be considered racist and exclusivist. And the other problem is that culturally, it is incorrect for one ethnicity to speak for another because if they are not of the same ethnicity they are naturally an outsider. However, this woman denies "white" women the respect of admitting that they have their own experiences and voices just like any other ethnicity. The problem with this being, when you segregate a group and give it a name of "the other", you do something parrallel to opening the gates of hell. It makes way for misunderstanding and hatred. Just think of all of the races that have been persecuted by 'white" people and named as "the other" and given a foreign and distant attachment to? How are we EVER going to possibly get over this racism and hatred when all the groups involved place each other in the position of foreigner? The different groups are full of different voices that deserve to be heard. They do not deserve to be pidgeon holed and generalised about. That is denying their validity and their uniqueness.
*Why when operating micro waves, do people push 1- 0- 0 instead of 6 - 0? I mean, think about it. Which requires more energy? Which is more efficient according to the task? I tell you it is the latter. And yet people still press 1-0-0. And then there are those fancy micros that you press 'quick on' and then 1 or whatever and it goes on. That's even dumber because it encourages people not to think about how much time they are actually using....
*All right. I seriously think that companies think people are stupid. And for the most part they are. But this made me laugh. I was shampooing my hair in the tub and I decided that I would like to read the labels (as I always do, no matter how many times I have read them, call it a habit) on my shampoo bottle. So I'm reading and all of a sudden I see the words 'No Animal Testing'. I started laughing. What does that mean? It doesn't mean shit. It's not saying that the company doesn't test on animals. It just says 'no animal testing'. It's like a social statement not a company policy.
*I think it should be mandatory that Chinese restaurants have Japanese Soy Sauce. I'm sorry, but Chinese soy sauce is just yacky. I would rather eat my rice plain than put that China Lily shit on it. But oh Kikkoman....sweet delicious kikkoman....
