The Fool The Fool is a symbol for the Fool in all of us. The Fool's history started in the town of Skövde, Sweden in August 1998. He was then a sculpture sitting outside one of the Swedish monopoly liquor stores, wearing his characteristic cone, endlessly waiting for his turn. The Fool deals with the constant risk of beeing fooled by what we are beeing exposed to by the state, religion, school/educational institutions, parents, banks, commercial interests, conventions, traditions, media etc., what we call "society", which actually is us. I wanted people to interact with the Fool by joining his chat. I invited people to write down their deepest thoughts about Life, Art and Paranoia or just whatever they felt like. Your contribution will be essential to this art work and for the forthliving and understanding of the Fool. By doing this, the Fool will be a multi-character being consisting of the whole gallery audience I want The Fool site to be a living site, with interaction as a constant part of the piece. I made several experiences concerning the chat environment, and about the factors this cultural phenomenon created as a relatively new medium for "speach", communication and interaction. The chat sessions became 4 in numbers, and I noticed an increasing focus/quality along the way. I learned that beeing prepared and getting people to show up is the most important to get the sessions to work. However, you can never calculate about the outcome because you never know in advance what mix of people it will be. My intention was to let a computer accompany the plaster sculpture at the gallery. However, because of circumstances I had to let people know about the chat via notes. This was not totally successful, though a number of people showed up (thank you!) I've learned till next time that I will definitely advertise about upcoming chat sessions in a more aggressive way. I do want though to keep the somewhat "secrative" feeling about the Fool so that people show up to chat not because of gigantic posters or spam e-mail, but rather from rumors. This might happen if the chats turn out successful and people tell their friends. See you in cyberspace. |
