BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Matthew and Ann (Hawkins) Whipple

Matthew Whipple was born about 1590 in Bocking, Essex, England, the fourth of nine children of Matthew and Joan Whipple. His mother's maiden name is unknown.

Ann Hawkins was born about 1604. Conflicting information exists regarding the names of her parents.

Matthew and Ann were married on May 7, 1622 in Bocking and had numerous children in England:

The family emigrated to America between 1636 and 1638 and were among the early settlers of Ipswich, Massachusetts, where Matthew would become a deacon of the Congregational Church. One more child was born: Joseph Whipple, in 1640.

Ann died three years later, in 1643.

Matthew would marry again -- reportedly to a woman name Rose, the widow of Lionel Chute.

Matthew died on September 28, 1647 or 1648.
