Yevgeny Yevtushenko (b.1933)
Yevtushenko is one of the most celebrated figures in
contemporary Russian poetry. He was allowed to travel
in Europe and America to give readings. I was fortunate
to hear him both in Moscow and in New York. His most
famous poem is Babii Yar. It was written
in 1961 and is an elegy for the 96,000 Jews executed
during the war by the Nazis in a ravine near Kiev; it is
also a fierce indictment of Russian anti-Semitism.
