by Fargy & MadamHoney We're going to the keys. We drive south from Miami,at the end of the mainland there's a streach of road 18 miles long which connects mainland Florida to Key Largo. As we drive south, the scenery opens up on both sides of the road. Water in both directions & mangrove trees. You will see the water begin to lighten in color as we drive south. As we arrive in Key Largo, we cross a bridge and looking out we see the ocean for the first time, the color of the water in the Keys ranges from dark blue to light tan, the bottom varies so much that it changes the color. I have seen some days when you could look out on the horizon and can't tell where the water and sky meet, absolutely beautiful, much like yourself. As we drive through Key Largo, we cross another bridge onto Plantation Key and then another on to Windley Key and yet another onto Islamorada. We stop for lunch at a little restaurant called the Green Turtle Inn. They have the best grouper sandwidhes in the keys. May I order one for you? After lunch we continue south. The Keys streach 100 miles from Key Largo to Key West, we are around milemarker 70 , measured from Key West. We continue to drive south through Marathon, the mid way point in the keys and the largest town. We stop for some supplies and continue on. At the end of Marathon is the 7 mile bridge, we begin to cross it, the land falling away in all directions and here we are on a two lane bridge surrounded by nothing by water and islands in every direction. Ahead of us there is a rise at the mid point of the bridge to allow boats to pass, from here you can see endlessly in all directions , truly breathtaking. Coming down the rise, we can see the small islands we're heading toward. We cross several small islands and bridges and arrive in Big Pine Key. I want to take a side trip and show you something. On Big Pine there's one road which turns off the main road, so we turn right slowly proceeding. You might notice that the farther we go, the slower the speed limit is. As we continue the houses and everything human disappears, nothing but woods and the water in the distance.

I stop the car ..look..over there you see a tiny deer with a full rack of horns, he stands only about chest high. He's a Key Deer...the species only lives on Big Pine. We're heading due south now toward the reef, all along the Keys is the last living reef in America. It runs parellel to the land about 5 miles off shore.
