The Chantalaine
Suspended by a top chain from a notch or ring in her belt or apron, the chatelaine could have several
, pendant chains with a hook or clip fastener with useful accessories, called fittings .
Educated ladies, carried a miniature pen, letter opener, and a small metal-covered notepad, also
with clasp and lock to keep the notes a secret from prying eyes. As years went by, more personal accessories
were added, such as what-not caddies for medications, and nail and face toiletry miniatures.
Handbags in the good old days were usually quite small, only worn when leaving the house,
and contained no more than a dainty handkerchief, smelling salts, perhaps a small vial of toilet
water, rose, lilac or lavender, and a calling card case.
