Folks, being as this is a new site without much promotion at this time, I had planned
to leave the 1st general, but maybe rambling, editorial up for a few weeks. I read a news
release this morning and changed my mind. I just have to comment on it. You may want to
read the 1st paragraph on the " Hands of Man" in the July Editorial. It has a
side page on an endangered bird species with it. Click
here for July Editorial. The following editorial is the result of a news release
and I posted it on the MSN Nature Photography N.G., then decided it should go here
also. Click here for the news release that triggered
Greyhawks anger. 8/3/98 added special page on another
massacre.. in Carrollton, Texas. See link at bottom of page.

God give us strength, hope,

There are many bad people out there that should
never be allowed outside the city limits or what ever "home turf" street gang
with deficient mentality area that they come from. This sort of thing goes on in many
areas of nature. About 10 years ago I was in Yellowstone helping a friend with a nature
photography class. While talking to a ranger, we heard a shot ring out and 3 rangers
jumped into their vehicles at full speed and put the hammer down. We were hearing the
random shots off and on for the 3 days we were in Yellowstone. (Guns are illegal in all
National Parks!) We also were running into a lot of bull elk carcasses that were fresh and
not natural deaths. The rangers told us that there were people coming into the park
annually, killing the bull elk in rut and taking their horns. These were sold to Japanese
businessmen in order to make their magic powders and wonder drugs that are so common over
there. Another different type incident happened about 12 years ago here in Colorado. In
October, which was hunting season, an early and very bad snowstorm had hit the Continental
Divide over by Buena Vista. A very large herd of elk fought their way through the
drifts and down into the valley in order to get food. In a large field next to the
highway, about 40 to 50 hunters surrounded the elk on that sad day and proceeded to have a
turkey shoot. The killing field ended up in the slaughter of about 200 or more elk. These
two incidents and the news release are not the only areas that are causing great harm to
wildlife and/or their habitat. I once was out with an Audubon group of about 10 members
and watched them completely trample down a small marsh, with their bird call tape players
going full blast. They were on a bird count. They won't have to worry about counting birds
in this spot next year, I thought to myself while choking back the anger and frustration.
A few of them were leaders, and they never had to worry about me again either. Especially
after some of the screaming I did a couple days later and throwing one of them out of my
shop. I have known a couple of so called Pro Nature Photographers that have caused the
death of bluebirds feeding their young, plus a hawk, and golden eagle clutch. This was
caused by their get the image and to hell with the subject type attitude. OK, you say,
where is all this leading? Read the following paragraph and think!
Friends, you are nature photographers and
therefore spend time out in the boonies, parks, and wilderness areas. When you are out
there, ... What do you have in your hand or on the tripod over your shoulder? Its
called a "tool" by the knowledgeable! This tool, aka camera, not only can
show nature in all its beauty and splendor, but can also show ugliness in nature, ... and
MAN!! We all waste shots, and some of you bracket which also waste some shots. I am
asking you, no I'm pleading with you to "waste some more shots as a habit". The
snowstorm killing field illustration above was covered by some media photographers and
their images led to the arrest and conviction of many of the "felons" Make
it a habit that anytime you see something out there that seems suspicious or strikes you
as wrong or maybe illegal, use that tool and your talent to take a few shots. These shots
are more powerful and more useful than gun shots. Maybe you find out that the situation
wasn't as you thought it was and wasted a frame or two. So what? We do that anyway, and
this gives a little practice at something very constructive. In your hand you are holding
the most potent and lethal weapon known to man, when used in a legal battle for
prosecuting criminals. Use it freely, just in case! You may be one that helps to get these maniacs out of our
last natural areas. I hope that all of you will be one.
