The Olympic Peninsula encompasses the Northwest portion of the state of Washington. Included in that is the most Northwestern tip of the lower 48 states at Cape Flattery, as well as the vast portion designated as the Olympic National Park. |
Often referred to as " three parks in one" the park encompasses three different ecosystems , rugged glacier capped mountains , 60 miles of wild Pacific coast and old growth and temperate rain forest. |
Approximately 95% of the park is designated wilderness accessible only by trail. No roads, accommodations or services. |
It is host to 70 species of mammals and 1200 higher plants and 300 species of birds. Some of which are found only here. Twelve major rivers and 200 smaller streams also provide a rich habitat for fish and other aquatic creatures. |
My objective in sharing a few selective images here is simply to offer you a small taste of this vast magical place. |
We are in the Hoh Rainforest. (Over 12 feet of rain per year). Although it is impossible for me to choose a favorite location on the peninsula because of its diversity and magnificence , I do find that the Hall of Mosses ranks among the tops. |
Magical and mystical barely touch it! |
Also home to some record size Western Red Cedars. In the company of giants. |
The peninsulas
coastline is wild and unpredictable and beautiful ! |
Neah Bay, location of the most northwestern tip of the lower 48 at Cape Flattery is home to the Makah tribe. On one particular visit here my friend and I arrived on the tail of a very heavy storm. The waters were wild and apparently several boats had been lost . |
I have only just offered a small sampling of what this wonderful place has to offer. Waterfalls, mountains, coastline, Lake Crescent and the list goes on. --- Jeri Childs --- |
