Kliewe Family Highlights for 2003
<2002 2004>
- January
- At dinner one night, John asks Harry to pass the gravy.
"There is no gravy" Harry says in a threatening voice.
"There's only you.
And me.
And Evil."
We're trying not to read too much into that answer.
- February
- Miriam and John watch the Michael Jackson interview on TV.
Neither one of us can sleep for a week.
- March
- We rent the family classic "Sounder", in which a poor man spends years in hard
labor after feeding his starving family with a ham stolen from a rich man.
"See that?" Harry declares at the end of the movie, apparently unmoved by the age-old
tale of injustice, "he should never have taken that ham in the first place."
- April
- When asked "what does Dad need for his birthday?" Harry responds "how about
a little class?"
- May
- We rent a few more Hollywood musicals.
Sam explains to Harry that "Annie Get Your Gun" is not the sequel to "Annie."
- June
- On our first day of vacation on Cape Cod, we notice that a large broken-winged seagull is inhabiting our stretch of beach. Our goody-goody neighbors set up a round-the-clock vigil to nurse the bird back to health. During our shift, we contact Animal Control, who come by and determine that the poor creature would really be more comfortable in a nearby dumpster.
- July
- After renting "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" and "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad",
Sam describes his concept for a new movie.
It will star Harry and be called "The Annoying Brother of Sinbad."
- August
- Big blackout! For the first time in fourteen years we can actually see stars in the night sky.
- September
- Sam writes in his journal: "My brother is the kind of person who likes horror movies.
Otherwise, I love him."
- October
- School is going well. Harry joins the newspaper staff and is disappointed to learn
that he'll be writing for the school paper, as opposed to
appearing in it.
- November
- This month we look back on the life of "Mommie's Grandma" Lillian Fuchs (1910-2003).
We'll miss her very much.
- December
- We watch "The Wizard of Oz" and Harry determines that the real moral of the
film is "Never get a dog."
Wishing you a 2004 filled with health, happiness,
and just a little bit of class!
