Prophets of Profits was a collaboration between fellow unde
rgraduate student Eveline Shih and myself intended to provide an open dialogue w
hich was not present on UCI's campus between administrators and students. We beg
an faxing a number of unsolicited documents to all fax machines located on campu
s, regarding issues as the rise of fees, the questionable appointment of Univers
ity Regents, the Los Angeles rebellion, Juror profiles of the LAPD officers in t
he Rodney King case, and other local issues. The faxes continued from April
to June, and in June had a one room installation which concluded the project. Th
e installation consisted of copies of all faxed materials in a slide presentatio
n, symbolic representation of the RegentsŐ inaccessibility, a wall of interactio
n which could be written on as a message to the Regents, and cartoon panels with
clues to the mystery our University system works under. In the center of the ro
om there was a conference table with representations of the UC schools, in the f
orm of puppets, a reference to the manipulation involved and the powerlessness o
f Students to administrate their needs. Cones of silence hung overhead represent
ing the secret meetings held by the UC Regents, creating a visual reference of p
ossible KKK or dunce caps.
