The Year of the White Bear: Take One
The Year of the White Bear: Take One was a performance by Coco Fusco and
Guillermo Gomez-Peña which I assisted with. I was responsible for the signs,
the announcements, and for creating the maps and encyclopedia references
which were designed to be authentic, as were the aborigines they portrayed.
Students of University of California, Irvine, created performances
surrounding theirs designed to enhance the realism, such as have your
photograph taken with the aborigines, and vendors of authentic aboriginal
artifacts. We were commenting on the idea of buying culture, through the sale
of objects, and the relationship to western civilization.
This performance has travelled throughout the U.S. and Mexico, following
the first exhibit at UCI.
