LIFE DRAWING -- Branham Sketchbook Assignments for first quarter life drawing students

(Sketchbooks are to be turned in the last day of class as stated in syllabus)

Do these drawings in pencil or ink. The drawings should be precise with great care taken to observe correct proportions. Recommended: one color to draw bones, a second color (red) to mark construction lines and points, and a third color to draw lines representing outline of living body in relation to bony structure.

Introduction to the skeleton

Full page drawings of the skeleton, front, back and side view in proportion, based on the Richer's 7 ½ head model. Show relationship of line of living body with bony structure by marking all subcutaneous bone in red. The side view should show correct position in relation to balance line. See list below:

  • ear hole (mid point across side view of skull) on vertical balance line
  • cervical portion of spine starts slightly in back of the vertical line of          gravity and curves backward
  • lumbar vertebrae on or slightly behind vertical balance line
  • high point of iliac crest slightly behind vertical balance line
  • head of femur fits in acetabulum (vinegar cup) located just in front of          the vertical balance line and at the top of the 4th head length         from the bottom
  • femur - bowed from just behind vertical axis (the curve of the femur          should not be understated -- even though it is deeply buried in         muscle it has a profound effect on the shape of the leg
  • knee joint and forward edge of tibia just behind the balance line
  • arch of the foot on the balance line

                    Arm, forearm, wrist, hand

Full page length drawings of the front and back views of supinated position of the long bones of the arm and forearm; draw outline of fleshed out arm around bones marking all subcutaneous points and lines in red. Draw bones of the hand showing articulation with the forearm bones.

Thigh, leg, foot

Front and external side views of bones of thigh, leg and foot. Mark subcutaneous points and lines in red.

                    Skull and neck

Draw front and side views of skull and neck vertebrae; mark all subcutaneous bone in red, paying particular attention to where bone directly affects the form of the face on the living figure.

Muscular system

Draw front and back view of entire figure showing surface muscles of the body.
