SUPPLY LIST - ART 350 LIFE DRAWING BRANHAM

This is a very basic and inexpensive list. It is required and should be assembled by the first (working) class meeting. The university does not supply any of these items even if you forget something, so don't ask. DO NOT plan to shop during class time.

The Portland State U. Book Store and Art Media usually have sales going the first week of the quarter so this is a good time to stock up.

drawing board: there are several kinds of drawing boards available: wood: advantages - light, smooth, can                      use push pins to attach paper; disadvantage - expensive

masonite board with clips: advantage - cheap; disadvantage - clips are awkward, can't use push pins

lauan hardwood board: advantages - cheap ($15 for a 1/4" X 4' X 8' sheet) good surface, lightweight, can                      use push pins, can cut any size; disadvantage - have to go to lumber yard and buy a sheet and have it                      cut to desired sizes (good group project)

20" X 30" is a good size if your'e going to store it in a locker.

a wooden dowel, 1/8" diameter, 15" to 18" long an important tool, you can get this at Fred Meyers where                      wood moulding, etc. is stocked, craft stores, etc.; costs about 30 cents; do not get too wide a dowel

several sticks of vine charcoal (soft) this material is used up quickly so you will have to replenish unless                      you buy an ample amount

several sticks of black conte crayon (2B) be sure to get the soft

several compressed charcoal sticks (Char-Kole) -- soft

chamois skin ( you really do need to have this -- there is no good substitute)

            workable fixative

bond paper pad (18"X24" approximately) Bond paper is like typing paper, a very smooth white surface. Do                      not get newsprint!

portfolio to store paper and drawings; get one with a handle

            sketchbook (11"X 17" recommended)
