Clara Kikue O'Connor

Clara was born July 24, 1996, at 7:34 p.m., by emergency C-section. She weighed 3 lbs. 4 oz., was pretty healthy all around. She received oxygen for a few hours over night, and with the help of some lung surfactant, graduated to air quickly with no lung distress.

Ken snapped this pic at Highland Hospital Special Care Nursery. Clara was in the Strong Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (they pronounce it "Nick-you") for 12 days. Felt like forever. The doctors decided she could go to the Special Care Nursery at Highland to stabilize enough and gain enough weight to go home. That was a lot closer to home and easier on Therese, who was most of each day with Clara.

Clara came home on Saturday August 31.

At last weigh-in around October 10 she was 7 pounds 5 ounces, and a long 20 inches. She's a big hunk o' baby now. Her due date was September 28, so reckoning from then she is just over 3 weeks old as of the time of this writing, October 21, 1996.
