I have a question in regard to your review for "A Place Among the Stones." In your first paragraph you mentioned that Davy Spillane plays an Overton whistle and operates a sell-through system for them, and that you bought one from him. My question is, what is a "sell-through system"? I too am interested in playing the low whistle as well as at some time in the future learning the uilleann pipes. I currently play the high whistle (for about a year) and just picked up a G flute, and am interested in expanding to other wind instruments. I just saw (for the first time) the Riverdance video, as well as the sequel, wow! Do you know if Blatley really played the flute on the sequel? Also do you know if the whistle parts in some of the dances is really a whistle or a keyboard. The music almost sounds too perfect (and without breathing) to be a wind instrument. Gene Mxwell

I've been playing my low whistle for a month now, and it's not really hard, actually. I use it especially for the slower tunes, some of which don't sound really well on a tin whistle. The faster tunes are more difficult on such a big whistle, so I save th se for my tin whistle. I'm going to try flute as well, soon I hope. (that depends on my mail order).

I was delighted to find this web-site. I am a professional clarinet player but I have just been in Ireland and loved the sound of the low whistle. So I bought one (Low C, Chieftain) but my problem now is learning to play it!! By the way, the reason that bought a C rather than the usual D is that I play regularly with a traditional New Orleans style jazz group where the front line are all playing Bb instruments, so D is very difficult. I think that the low whistle will be great for some of the blues and sprituals that we play.

Wonderful site! I have an URGENT question(s) for you knowledgeable folk who manage this site. I need to find a LOW Eb whistle ASAP to play with Sinead O'Connor in 4 days. I just spent hours on-line and my head is spinning. What is the best model you k ow of? Is the Chieftain a good whistle? (This was the one used in Riverdance, I understand.) How would it compare to a Michael Burke or a Reyburn? And how are lower-end whistles like Susato or Michael Cook. What does PVC or plastic sound like compared to metal? Do you think it's necessary to get a tunable model? If you have answers to any of these questions, or know anyone that would, I would love to hear from you. Thank you so much! -- Darius

Hi folks, I am a novice to the Low whistle, although I've been playing a Sweetone high D, clarinet, and recorder for some time. I love the haunting quality of the sound (when I can get it to come out!). (grinnnnnnn) Any tips on playing that you'd care to pass alon ? I'm having some trouble with the spread between the holes, for I have somewhat short fingers. Finally, if there are any players in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area, please send along an email. We have a group, "Celtic Jam," that plays on Sunday nights (me on whistles and recorder, a fiddler, a bodhran player, 3 mountain dulcimer players, spoons, and 1 or 2 guitar players). We'd love to have others with whom to jam. Cheers!

We still take 99% of Dave Shaws output. Like your web site, please look at ours, there is a potted istory from the viewpoint of Bernard Overton and Finbar Fury who really restarted the whole whistle thing back in 1969.

I started on the high D whistle about a year ago, and recently moved on to the Low D, although, I still consider the high to be my 'first' instrument, especially after receiving my Sindt, a few weeks ago. I love my Low Overton, and the Susato was perfect o start on. Eventually I would love to own a Copeland. One day, I hope to be able to play fast on the Low D, but, as for now, I am happy to play the slow tunes...I think the Low D is more suited to slow tunes anyhow, with its haunting and soothing tone. The News page claims that Tony Hinnegan played the G Copeland whistle on the Titanic soundtrack. According to the new Copeland website at http://www.copelandwoodwinds.com/: >> I hear rumors about the low whistle used on the soundtrack for the movie "Titanic". Is it a Copeland? A. Yes, positively, according to Michael. The whistle on James Horner's original soundtrack is owned and played by Keith Underwood, and it is a Copeland Low G. The soundtrack CD hit #1 on the national sales charts in January 1998, so that whistle has been getting a lot of exposure to folks who probably had no idea what a whistle was. Titanic is reportedly the fastest-selling album of a movie score since Star Wars in 1977-- which never made it to the #1 slot. <<

Well, you know, it's quite difficult for someones living in the mediterranian, like I(I live close to València, in Spain), to find interesting things about Irish and Atlantic music, so I like to find places like this where I can see others who like same t ings than me. I am a member of the Galician cultural center here in my city(Castelló), I ply regular whistles and a Boëhm flute, and I am learning Galician Bagpipes, but I don't know a word about low whistles, so I will thank any information about this, o everything related with Celtic music, or just someone wanting to speak about jigs, reels or muñeiras. Good site!. Don't miss my traditional bands, Tan-Shival(Irish-Galician) and Saüc (mediterranian- catalan folck)

I have recently started playing the tin whistle. I am 16 and from Newfoundland, Canada. As a teenager, the tin whistle may not be the most popular instrument to play, but I find it interesting as well as a great part of our Irish culture.

I'm just getting started with my Susato Low D; man! what a difference it is from a regular D! My right hand is not cramping as badly as it did at first, and I'm actually starting to produce some recognizable sounds. I'm thinking that maybe I should have gone with an Irish flute, because that's sorta the sound I was after. You know, low, breathy, sensual, and emotional. Maybe I'll get to that point with this Low D, but I wish that I could produce more power and volume in the lower range. Any suggestion would be welcome. By the way, I really like your website.

I play several different types of whistles and concert flute (wooden simple system). I have been active in Irish music since childhood, and now it is my profession. Some comments in general about low whistles from a player and teachers point of view. These are great instruments, and very different in their handling and playing from the higher whistles. In my opinion makers should consider experimenting with models ( like Shaw, and the old Copelands) built with some sort of tapered bore, making them easier for younger students and smaller handed persons.( Having large hands myself , this didn't dawn on me until I started teaching) The conical type low whistles also se m to have an easier time with intonation in the upper octave. Good luck to you all, Chad McAnally

I like this as a no nonsense "working" low whistle which although lacks a lot of the breathiness of his later remodeled ones still works well across the range. It has been improved however by buying a new (remodeled) head direct from Brian Howard. I'd xperimented with the old head by cutting back from the fipple (increasing the space between the mouthpiece and the blowing edge) this increased the breathiness of it but also sharpens the whistle, so you have to pull the head out more.

Hi Thanks for your nice website. Perhaps you're interested in adding to your website that there's a new brand of low-whistles available. The name of this new brand of whistles is: "Gan Ainm", and is made in Norway by myself. They're made from PVC tubing,-and a low-G whistle is now available for U.S. $ 53,-freight included. -Also a low-E whistle is underway,-which sounds really promising. If you'd like to know how the low-G sounds,-ask Dale Wisely. A website for these whistles is coming soon. -If you want, I'll notify you when the site is up and going. Best wishes Erik Torp-Olsen Norway

Whilst in Dublin two weeks ago, I stopped in at Walton's on Sth Great Georges Street. I had the pick of an Overton low D whistle, a Chieftan and another instrument that was dark in color, conical in shape, was tunable, and came with a case. I chose the hieftan because it was less than 10 pounds more than the one with case; but it was almost 40 pounds less than the Overton. I'm only getting the hang of playing the low whistle and, therefore, am not a reliable source to comment on the quality of the instrument. I asked the clerk if there was a compilation of music for the low D whistle. He didn't know of any. Is there such a compilation? I read music and find that method more reliable and quicker in learning tunes. If not, do you have any suggestions? Larry Iverson

I have been playing in alternate way the tinwhistle... including low A, G and D.... I don't own yet a low D.. I will have to wait 2 years for a Copeland.... I make my own low D notched kenachos, so... I would appreciate any suggestions for fipple heads for a convertion to low D whistle... thanks... Lucho>

Great site. What happened to the "Rose Theme"? I liked to play it whenever I signed on. Whistles rule. Got to get me a Low F as well. Wish that Susato made in the low ranges. Bagpipes were found in Titanic wreck, what about whistles? The perfect Sphinx ---body of a woman, head of a cat.

I really liked the site but I'm still searching for the score for the low whistle part to Rose's Theme from Titanic. I am also looking for a lovely sounding, reasonably priced low c whistle and one that's fairly near Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I currently sing and play concert flute and a Clarke D whistle. Good site!

Hello, I just stumbled upon your site through a cross-reference, since I am a whistle player (and maker). I like your instructions and graphics. The graphic design of the whistle pages remind me of the sound of the whistle--understated, gentle, and a bit myster ous. I hope to explore more another time. I guess we're "neighbors," since I'm at geocities, too. Drop by my site some time, if you like (http://geocities.datacellar.net/SoHo/Lofts/6611/). It's not as sophisticated as yours, but you might find something interesting there. Keep whistling. And keep dreaming. ---kfb---
