My home... on this planet

Johannesburg

I live in Johannesburg, the capital of South Africa. Big city... hmmm - yuck. But there is a wonderful oasis in Johannesburg called Melville. It has always been the hang out of all the "art farty" folk, and frequented by the "yuppie" folk over the weekends, since we have such exquisite cafe restaurants.

Melville is in the older part of the city, so the houses are older and quaint looking. Many of the houses have been converted into little shops, galleries, cocktail bars, craft shops and cafes. The indigenous inhabitants of Melville are "post hippies" and nowadays more and more trendy "wanna-be-cultural" folk.

Melville

Barefoot pixies
roam through a
quaint corner
of the global village...

Sunshine....
and white teeth gnawing at poetry...
Smiles...
and colourful voices wafting out onto
sidewalk cafes...

Here we sway gently
like cool fish
though the sizzling streets,
and smoky jazz clubs.

Ah!
I love this oasis
in Johannesburg...!

Homecoming

Coming home to Melville;
to the sympathetic seranade
of the Blues
in café society.
Catching up on
a world that passes me by each day
in the evening paper -
with a cocktail and cigarette,
and the chatter of people
eating nachos.

Coming home to Melville
at Sunset,
beating the stars
to their set.
Beating the hordes of
"cultured folk"
wrapped up in Winters’ coats,
before the village
comes alive.
