Tuesday June 17, 1997 -- Fun Daze

I'm doing the Diary Collaboration tomorrow

The past couple of days have been fun, hectic and stressful.

The hectic and stressful parts were all work-related, and related to the trip to St.Louis on Thursday. I'm not ready on the one hand, but then they aren't really excpecting perfection. If I can walk the walk, and talk the talk, I'll be ok. It's very much a saleman thing to do, but we're really talking about ideas, not real programs so far.

The real question is what do they expect? If I come in under expectations that's bad. But not a disaster...I don't think. Well, I think you can see where the stress comes from.

The fun parts all deal with writing. Trying, but not particularly succeding at "The Artist's Way" I had my Artist's Date last night. I know it's pop culture and all that, but I rented Wizard of Oz, and played my Dark Side of the Moon Cd. All I'll say is that the first run-thru of the CD the transitions were priceless. The dissonant parts of Time starting when the Old lady arrives to take ToTo away. The dissonant, angry parts of the song work well in the argument after.

Either song transitions or internal-track changes matched scene/character changes, and so on. As the movie progressed I became less enthused with the experiment, but it had it's good moments, even later in the film. All in all, a good artist-spark sort of thing.

I started wondering what it would be like to re-score an old movie, Like Wizard of Oz. How much coulod you change the story by changing the music, how could you add a new level to the story, and so on.

Tonight I went to a writer's workhop/meeting. The co-ordinator didn't show up, but 7 writers did. Six of which wrote fiction (3 sci/fi, 2 civil war/historical, 1 novel/mystery). It was interesting to talk to other writers, and hear some of their writing. I didn't have anything in a form for reading, but I will when we meet again in two weeks.

I also finally wrote my personal (and will probably post it in a couple of minutes). When I wrote it, I just wrote the line "I am a writer." Not, "I am a computer consultant" or "I am a computer programmer", but "I am a writer." I started to change it, but then I realized. I am a writer. Maybe it doesn't put food on my table yet. But that's who I am, now.

It's good to know, at least one thing.
