This is a pencil drawing of the family dog, Boots, who passed away several years ago. We never knew exactly how old he was, but it was thought that he was at least 2 years of age when we brought him home from the dog pound.
Boots appeared to have German Shepherd markings and the facial features of a beagle. We kept him tethered on a dog run, but every so often, he would break free and run toward a back field on our property. Several hours later, he would limp back home, his right rear leg barely touching the ground. In addition to a lame leg, Boots had a few scars across the bridge of his nose. We speculated that he was either in a fight with another dog or with a human being. Sometimes, when we tried to pat his head, he would cower from your hand.
Boots was a great dog. I am sure many pet owners feel that way about their own animals. He came to us with the name of "Boots" and shortly after his arrival at our house, we discovered why he was named after footwear: he loved to chew on shoes. Not only would he chew shoes until they were unwearable, he would take them, and also socks, and hide them under the cushions of the sofa and chairs. He was so adorable, although I'm sure at the time we thought his actions were less than desirable. But we loved him just the same. He was a great dog. He is remembered fondly but sorely missed.
This particular pencil drawing, entitled "Boots", was selected by a screening committee for a juried exhibition at the Fitchburg Art Museum. The 58th Regional Exhibition of Arts and Crafts was held between July 11 and September 5, 1993. That particular show featured 337 works by nearly 200 artists from more than 50 communities surrounding the Fitchburg, Massachusetts area.
This is one of my favorite pencil drawings of Boots, and I hope you enjoy it as well.
