Static 2 was nearly back to its border mos. ISA would not know about the exit in the ravine: the unit commander had been obscuring the road. The exit itself was hid behind a small landslide. With some tanks in its garage, they might be able to strike back. The tank company threaded its way through tunnels from the north garage of the mos to the south.
Elliot didn't have time appreciate the mos's amenities, such as they were. Not like Mos Andrew, but nothing was. They waited in their vehicles and listenned to the reports. The static infantry withdrew to their mos. The enemy proceeded up the valley, investigating each valley and ravine on either side. They were soon outside of the garage. And continued on. Elliot relaxed. The worst was over, and the rest would be as easy as murder.
The mos began a barrage at the same time the landslide was blown clear. A cavalry team went ahead on foot. They killed the unwary flankers before an alarm was raised. The armour crept into the ravine.
The main force had passed the ravine in their assault on the mos. The ambushers weren't going to waste their strength against it anyway. By careful radio traffic analysis, the static infantry had located their commander among the supply trucks. They painted the IFV with an infrared laser for Elliot and the bombers.
They burst out of the ravine and coverred a kilometer before ISA reacted. That's when the bomber section checkerboarded their ranks. They braked and fired everything else they had into the supply column. By that time Elliot was in the lettuce field. The tanks shot any vehicle that moved. Their infantry jumped out and went vehicle by vehicle to kill every officer. The surviving supply trucks dispersed as their own tanks charged toward Elliot. But it was too late. The infantry remounted.
Their enemy became confused and was dispersed in the valley. Elliot
expected their XO to have survived. He would rally his forces eventually,
but at the moment, Elliot and the company ran like wolves among the sheep,
isolating and destroying enemy tanks, carriers, and SPAs. They made it
safely and easily back to the garage.

Hello, Peter.
I heard about it. Is there anything I can do?
Losing a month's pay at what you pay us is no great loss. Don't worry, I've got enough money. With a screwup this big somebody has to take the blame. It's what's expected.
What about the reprimand?
So, my Army career is finished. Big loss. I didn't want one anyway.
I never did understand why you joined.
I know, Peter. That's why I'm here and you're there. Someone has to do the work.
You could rejoin the Project.
No.
Is this another Los Angeles? There are other places you could work.
One thing at a time. Right now, I'm rather busy with this revolution you started.
We started.
She tried to remember Los Angeles. After she had killed Alan, she left Peter and his precious project. She had suddenly realised how many more people would be killed. Even if they were successful. Linda's models had too many guesses for Verity's taste.
It was quite a dream Peter had shared with them, back when they were
his students. Verity had an amusing thought: there might still be a warrant
out for Peter and Diana. Should she drop a quarter on him? Tell the FBI
the mastermind of this revolution was wanted for sabotage?
So clever. The exhaust pipe split open. Alan just disappeared.
