She had often been to g-27, the flight simulator lab, as part of her routine training. But this time they had cooked up something special for her. They had wired up an R1 for remote control and connected it to one of the flight simulators. From the comfort and safety of deep inside Mos Andrew, she was to bomb the supply road I-5 just north of Los Angeles.
The takeoff roll was good. The panoramic view was a little grainy, but sounds were authentic, and they even got some of the vibrations and bumps. And the takeoff roll was fast. Without yellow overrides, the R1 took off much faster than it could have with a human inside. She looked to her left where patrol fighters orbitted.
Oh, my.
Yes, Ms James?
You're HUDing on the sides of canopy. I'm seeing enhanced fighters on my port.
Yes. Basically the entire canopy is now a HUD, so we can augment images in any direction.
Clever. Sara moved her head back and forth. And no parallax.
She flew southeast through the coast ranges. Once past the border, she broke mach. How low can I push it?
As low as you want. The overrides will keep you from flying into hills.
She pushed it down, down, down below treetop level. The R1 chatterred up and down rapidly to avoid ground hazards. The motion simulator doesn't match the visual.
At this speed, it would split open your veterbraes if it did.
I don't know. She pulled up a little. This is better. It's less confusing.
It was hard to tell where she was. The terrain was passing too quickly to recognise. According to the map, she was already halfway there. She had brief impressions of people and houses and vehicles. She realised she must be kicking up a hell of a shockwave. Sara followed the valley out of the mountains and into the San Joaquin Valley. It wasn't so claustrophobic. In spite of being safely in Mos Andrew, Sara gave a sigh of relief.
She was catching fringes of many radars, but none long enough for a weapons lock. She was running out of valley.
Do you want to me to do visual or laser release?
Which do you think is better?
I can't do a visual at this speed. I don't trust laser release. I never know exactly what the R1R is looking at.
Do what you think is best. The whole point of the test is to discover how and if we can use this technology.
Aye. Sara popped the brakes and braced. She was momentarily thrown against her harness. If she had really been in the R1B, the harness straps would have amputated her limbs. She had a line of trucks in her sights, but she let them go. They were in an open area of the pass where it would be easy to reroute traffic. A twist and turn, the pass narrowed and she found another target. She dispersed her bombs throughout the trucks. Bombed and unbombed trucks collided in the confusion until the entire convoy was ablaze and splatterred across all four lanes.
How about if I visit Los Angeles?
Negative. They're scrambling all over. Get your butt back now.
Technically speaking, it never left.
Technically speaking, how long would it take you to pay for an R1 out of your salary.
Returning to mos, aye.
Sara made an excruiatingly tight horizontal loop back to the north. Well....it is an interesting video game so far.
Not according-
Damn. As soon as she cleared the Tehachapis, two ISA fighters were on her. An RH was almost in her belly. Sara jerked into a hard roll left then right. The missile lost track and flew into the horizon. Oh, baby. I am hot today. The prey turned predator as she charged straight at the fighters. They lost nerve first and broke apart. Sara was able to turn on a dime and come up behind one. She didn't have room to fire a lancer. Instead, at full throttle, she passed just over him. Between the shockwave and vortices, she tore his wings off. He burrowed into the soil in less time than it took the image to travel his optic nerve.
The other pilot had recoverred and seemed to be looking for his partner. He found Sara instead. The lancer hit head on, shredding the nose so effectively it turned to a giant airbrake. The turbojets slammed through the cockpit.
Now this is a video game.
By your heatbeat quite one at that.
How long did it take to take those two fighters?
About ten seconds.
Geez. Felt like five minutes. Okay, okay, I've had my fun. I'll bring
your toy back now.
