Server Tools

Web Servers | Mail Servers | CGI Scripts | Misc. Programs

Server Tools are available in abundance on the "Net". You can find practically anything you need to run a web server, mail server, add to an existing server or anything else your imagination can come up with. Scripts, programs, and more are listed on this page.

Web Servers:
A web server is a program that allows you to serve web pages and images to people via the net. Generally to run one you need a permanent or semi-permanent connection to the Internet such as ISDN, Cable or DSL. You will also need a DNS server somewhere pointing to your machine. If you are using a dial-up type connection, you can still run a server using Dynamic DNS.

  • Xitami - My favorite! From Imatix corporation. Fast, free, easy to use, killer web server. Incorporates virtual hosting capabilities, server side includes and FTP. Operating Systems: Win95/98/NT, Linux, Unix, OS2. To see it in action visit i-MSE.com.
  • Apache - The king of web servers. More than 50% of all web sites run on Apache. Free, fast, stable (at least for Unix/Linux) and very configurable. Available for Linux, Unix, Win95/98/NT.
  • O'Reilly WebSite - The original web server for Win32 (Win95/98/NT) systems. A very good, but expensive web server. If you are running NT, this is a vast improvement over IIS3 or IIS4.

Mail Servers:
A mail server lets you send and receive email. Simple as that. They come in several varieties. If you have Unix or Linux, read no further. They both have Sendmail built in and that is all you will ever need. Servers listed below are for Win95/98/NT systems.

  • ArgoSoft Mail Server - Small, easy to use and free.
  • MDaemon Server - This is an excellent mail server. Incredibly configurable, with auto-responders, web based email options and more. Not cheap, but worth the price.
  • Merak Email Server - A bit more complex than Mdaemon, but a good choice for performance, especially if you are running on NT.

CGI Scripts:
CGI (common gateway interface) scripts allow you to do most anything with your server. Anything from Virtual Postcards, counters, to automated "recommend this page" type scripts are available. Amazingly, many of the coolest and most useful scripts are free!

For some of the very best and most useful scripts, start your quest at Matt's Script Archive. This is one of the oldest and best collections of truly useful scripts on the Internet. More than 20 scripts to choose from. The Formmail and Textcounter scripts are 2 of the best. I use them on 3 of my sites and have never had any problems with them.

Looking for a place to find thousands of great scripts all on one site? From the same folks who brought you Matt's Script Archive comes the CGI-Resource Index. This site lists more than 2672 CGI related resources in 270 categories. This is the place I go when I need to find a script for one of my sites. The index is searchable, has reviews/ratings of scripts and is one of the most useful resources on the net for webmasters.

It might be the strangest name in Webmaster Resources, but BigNoseBird.Com is one of the best sites for free scripts, tutorials and graphics. Their Virtual Card script is the basis for my cybergreet.net postcard hosting. Of course I modified the heck out of it, but underneath it is still the BigNoseBird virtual card script. Their "Recommend this Site" script is super easy and fast to set up.

Misc. Programs:
If you are running a Win95/98/NT based server some of the programs listed below may be of use to you.

If you want to run scripts, then you are going to need to have PERL [practical extraction and reporting language] on your system. The perl that ships with most Win32 based web servers is woefully inadequate. To get a full version of perl for free, with an easy to use installation use the perl build from Activestate. It is free, easily setup and runs darn near every cgi script out there, (even some that they say they only run on Unix!). I run Xitami server, so I recommend the older 522 build.

If you are like me, you are probably hopelessly addicted to counters. Why I have this fascination, I'll never know, but they are cool anyway. A fantastic little program for Win32(95/98/NT) servers can be found at Ryan Sammartino's website. It is a small executable, runs very fast, customizable and is free.
You can download the counter here
