THE CELESTINE SERIES
New Works by Benjie Cabangis

The exhibit is a series of monotype works combining drawings on digitally processed images, sources of which are the artist's previous drawings of figures and images. As a metaphor to the process, the works use these images repeatedly, occurring and recurring in each of the series to connect and coincide with other images, hand drawn or digitized. The elements of chance is best captured in the works and the distinction between hand-drawn and computer-processed images is blurred.

The collection presents 22 works, each measuring 6.5 x 8.125 inches, and rendered in pen and ink, dermatograph, inkjet print with UV resistant coating.

Prof. Ruben D.F. Defeo of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts and currently director of the UP Diliman Information Office curated the exhibit.

Cabangis stands as a pivotal force in charting the course of much of contemporary art being produced in the Philippines. He graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts in 1978. Since then, he has been a professor of painting at the college. For nine years he steered the direction of its Studio Arts curriculum as department chair.

He is a consistent recipient of awards and grants in recognition of his strategic role, among which are the Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award in 1978, the Fernando Amorsolo Professorial Chair in Painting in 1992 and 1996 and the Gawad Chanselor as University of the Philippines Outstanding Visual Artist in 1999.

Cabangis is represented in prestigious collections both in the Philippines and abroad, such as the International Finance Corporation in World Bank, Washington, D.C., the Philippine Center in New York, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Far East Bank and Trust Co., the Sycip, Gorres and Velayo & Co., the Manuel M. Lopez Development Center, and the Philippine Investments Management Consultants, Inc. (PHINMA) among others.
The Celestine Series is the artist's second show in New York. His first was the Philippine Sun Abstract Series held in October 1994. Two major shows in the Philippines came in between, Lupang Hinirang and Tao Po.
