Canadian Music

This part of the site I am dedicating to all the great  Canadian musicians that I think should be popular in the states but they don't get enough exposure. Come on ... do ya think that all Canada has to offer is Rush and The Tragically Hip and Alanis Morrisette ? EWWWWWWWW!!!! It's not as if Canada is a country from africa. The main language is English. And all we hear here is American music so why can't canadians make music as well?

anyways ............ off of my soapbox! To the Batcave!

Please Note !!! It's very important to note that there are almost no images on this  page that do not have a link to some where or the other .... So click around and have fun !

Gordie Johnson . That in itself should be enough to warrant admiration.
Gordie is the life-blood of Big Sugar. Big Sugar is a rock/blues/funk/reggae/jazz band that rocks my world. Gordie is one of the best guitarists I have seen live, an incredible slide guitarist and a fantastic dresser. He is a huge  HugoBoss fanatic. The band rounds out with Kelly Hoppe, the funny Tom Waits look alike that plays 10000 instruments and can play the harmonica to make ya cry. Gary Lowe brings some funky raggae stylins on the bass .... plus he has the kewl  older dreadlocked rastafarian look that is soooooo kewlio, and he is the calmest rock musician on stage I ever seen . Lastly the band is supported by the beats set down by the drummer Paul Brennan  who I swear looks like the evil guy in the Aeon Flux cartoons.
Anyways ... as usual on this website .... click on the pics above for more info.

Latest Album: HemiVision (pic n/a)  Best Album:
                                                                             Five Hundred Pounds

Review:  Excellent albums that use grinding guitar and effects that complement it, with beautiful blues and raggae undertones. HemiVision contains the hit single "Diggin a hole" that was kinda popular here in Canada and I hear it was played some in the U.S. . Meanwhile 500 Pounds is my favorite album of theirs and has some of the best guitar blues songs in the world on them including  "Ride Like Hell" (my fav Big Sugar song) and the classic blues song "Standing Around Crying". Worth checkin out.

Fav. Song: Ride Like Hell (off of the album 500 pounds)

Kinnie Starr

The kewlest female musician in Canada. She is also featured on this sites Women I Love section.
For more info on Kinnie check out what was said there and check out her website by clicking on the pics above and the album covers.

Latest Album :     Best Album :
                                    Tidy                                     Learning To Cook

Review : Both albums are excellent. Tidy has a few songs that were on Learning to Cook but that's because Tidy had a wider release and therefore Kinnie must have wanted her fans that missed it the first time around to get it the second time. No problems here. Kinnie spins hip-hop, rock, grunge, jazz and more around you to make ya wanna dance around. Check out the  Women I Love page for more info on Kinnie and click on the albums for more info on the albums.

Fav. Song:  Handsome Like a Man (off of the album Learning to Cook)

A really kewl punk/rock band that kicks ass . Led by kewli front man Hugh Dylan the Headstones are an old fashioned kick-ass stomp'em-till -they-drop band that has intense energy and rhythm. Hugh Dylan is also famous (in some circles) for his small role in the Bruce Macdonald flick Dance Me Outside , and his lead role in the cult classic movie Hard Core Logo. He kicks ass in Hard Core Logo so bad, as Joe Dick, that rumor has it that Quentin Tarrantino loved him so much he picked up the canadian film to be produced in the states and wants Dylan for his next project. Anyways .... if ya like yer music hard and kewl with an attitude check this band out !!!

Latest album:   Best Album:
Smile and Wave                           Teeth and Tissue

Review : Actually I can't really say if Teeth and Tissue is better then Smile and Wave because I haven't listened to Smile and Wave in full yet. When I do ... I'll let ya know . Meanwhile both albums kick ass ... but I think Smile and Wave is more professionally produced .... but Teeth and Tissue has more of a raw sound I like. Both are kewl for me and kick ass (see the pattern ? Isn't it nice ?)

Fav. Song: Cubicly Contained  (Off of the album Smile and Wave)

Junkhouse is a kewl band that came out of Ottawa, I believe. To make it simple ... they are kinda like Headstones but with a sentimental , good heart. They don't wanna rip ya up but they got some really good vibes goin . Led by their front man (shouldn't every good band have one ?) Tom Wilson  , who looks like a really nice guy with a goodhearted that is stuck in a kewl Hell's Angels body . Everyone that is in the Canadian music scene really likes the guy and are happy that their new album seems to be making a nice dent in Canadian music. I think he looks like the kind of guy I would like to have a beer with and strike out a blues jam in his backyard while eatin bar-b-q. Basic rock band with no meanness attached. Just good music.

Latest Album :      Best Album :
                                   Fuzz                                                Strays

Review : I can't say much about Fuzz because I have only heard the releases on the radio which amounts to about 3 songs .... but what I have heard I have liked..... Their previous albums Birthday Boy and my personal favorite Strays are excellent. I prefer Strays to the newer stuff because it is more stripped down and does not have that "refined production" sound going yet. I prefer honest stripped down music.

Fav. Song : Jesus Sings The Blues ( off of the album Strays)

This is Hayden, I like him a lot. He is the kind of musician I would like to be. The solo acoustic guitarist guy that sings from the soul and writes from the heart. The first time I saw him live I didn't even know who he was ... it was at the "Grunge that stole christmas" bash at the Opera House (local toronto venue) and he gave a really kewl performance alone with his guitar . In my opinion an artist that can captivate a crowd with only a guitar,  alone, is a special kinda performer. Anyways .... he is now on a semi major label after being a part of the Sonic Unyon  label (btw check out the Sonic Unyon website by clickin here) for his career and now he should make a lot more great albums. I just hope he doesn't lose that kewl rough indie sound I like. The indie sound is more real to me and more from the heart because you know that a producer isn't behind it . When artists join major labels they tend to change because they have to work with a producer . The producer becomes a part of the process and that could change the produce from a personal  item to a "what sounds good" thing. I prefer the personal. Most of Hayden`s stuff is like that so I hope he holds his ground . I haven't heard the new album yet ... I will tell ya when I do. Hayden also appears in the soundtrack for Steve Buscemi's (Mr. Pink from Reservoir Dogs) pet project movie Tree's Lounge by recording the title track .  He also directed the video for the title track and other local bands videos . Very talented guy eh ? Hayden is actually featured on the Tree's Lounge site and they have his song lyrics of the title track there and a downloadable file there of it.

Latest album :    Best Album:
Moving Careful                        Everything I Long For

Review: The new album i haven't heard yet as I mentioned but Everything I long for is an Excellent addition for any fans of raw personal music (like ya know I am). The song "Bad as they seem" is what first turned me on to Hayden when I heard the album. Very rough and real. Now that he is on a major record label I heard he toured america and is getting a wider release for his albums. Hopefully that will mean success in the states . Basically I would describe him as the Canadian poor man version of early Beck. Which is a great thing in my book.

Fav. Song: Bad as they seem (off of Everything I Long For)
