INSTA-CITY

WHAT IT IS (OR WAS):

"Insta-City" is a scale model, or sculpture, of a city intended to entertain those who build it and view it.

WHERE IT IS (OR WAS):

The first floor lobby of the library building here on the Evergreen campus has been reserved for "Insta-City."

The actual "city limit" is the rectangle bounded by the pillars in that lobby.

WHEN IT IS (OR WAS):

We begin construction on Sunday, April 27 and take it down on Tuesday, May 6.

That is 10 days.

Since this duration includes construction, half the fun is seeing it evolve.

HOW BIG IT IS (OR WAS):

Approximately 1,587 square feet is available in the reserved space.

20 city builders could each have about 79 square feet. That's about 9'x9'.

I do not know how high the ceiling is.

WHAT IT'S MADE OF:

Anything so long as it is safe (in this context) and does not make people sick (I mean no chemical fumes from paint, glue, rotting food etc..)

WHO BUILDS IT:

Hopefully, anybody willing and able to contribute will do so. ANYBODY.

ITS SCALE:

No scale has yet been determined, nor may ever. As an art piece, especially a collaborative one, consistency of scale may not apply. Some elements may suggest full scale, while others may suggest way smaller or even larger.

ITS CITIZENS:

We may provide citizens in the form of dolls, figurines, silhouettes, rumors, folklore, mysterious movements, or even real people or animals from time to time. (Please, no terrified animals or people left overnight.)

HOW LOUD IT IS:

If "Insta-City" is to make noise, it must do so only at volume levels and/or times which do not disrupt classes and work elsewhere in the building. Significant noisemakers should have means to silence them or greatly reduce their volume.

WHERE IT GETS ELECTRIC POWER:

All the boundary pillars have electric outlets.

ITS INTERFACE WITH BLIND PEOPLE

Ribbon will span the boundary pillars to inform guide dogs.

OFFSITE CONSTRUCTION AND STORAGE:

To facilitate making complex elements as units prior to adding them to "Insta-City," construction crews may use a room in the CAB basement, known as the "crypt". (Next to the Evergreen Bikeshop)

The "crypt" is a locked room shared by S&A and the college radio station, KAOS.

To use this room, crews will need to check out a key, and check it in again after each construction session.

The "crypt" is poorly lit. So crews may want to bring their own lighting.

Make sure the things you make in the "crypt" can fit through the standard sized door.

DECONSTRUCTION:

Evergreen authorities will give us more opportunities to do things like this if we get "Insta-City" out of the lobby on its last day. That is Tuesday, May 6.

"Deconstruction Day" can itself be an event of sorts. Perhaps portions of the city can be auctioned off, "bombed" or other simulated events of destruction brought upon them.

These acts of destruction, however, may follow some destruction from the previous day. On Tuesday, May 6, "Insta-City" will have undergone its "Finale" activities, some of which may be destruction.

Aside from this possible fun part, there remains the mundane chore of cleaning up.

Starting midday, we need volunteers to help dismantle and carry portions off to the dumpsters, recycling bins, the "crypt" and various other places on or off campus. Cargo carrying vehicles are especially needed here. Then, in the evening and possibly into the night, we need volunteers to sweep up the scraps and scrape up any other residues.

WHAT ITS CALLED:

The name "Insta-City" is optional. If some other name seems more appropriate, we can use it.

"FINALE DAY"

On the last day, Tuesday May 6, many city builders may want to "demonstrate" their work by way of showing off moving parts, telling stories about it, performing rituals of ceremony and/or destruction, and so on. This is "Finale Day."
