As an adult I had a dog Kim who I rescued from the ASPCA in Boston when she was four years old. She lived until the age of fourteen when she died of congestive heart failure in 1988. She was however, reincarnated, maybe, years later into an adorable, lovable Red-Tailed Boa Constrictor. His name was Beau, we lost him to bone cancer in November 1996. Whenever Dave or I see a belt on the bed or the floor, for a second it resembles him. He was only two years old and five feet long when he had to be euthanized. He should have lived to twenty years, but animals get cancer too. (Okay, except sharks and clams). I raised Beau from birth, handling him several times a day so he would grow up to be docile and used to being handled by people. This is the best way to tame a snake; handle them everyday from the time they are born. He was as affectionate and tame as any Golden Retriever I have ever met.
We had a peach-faced love bird
named Rosie.
She was quite animated and cuddly, she liked to be scratched on the neck.
Tommy was born in February 1997, we adopted
him from the CT Humane Society in April when he was 8 weeks old. We knew we
had to get a kitten as opposed to a cat so that he would accept the birds.
They all get along well.
Rosie used to free-fly during supervised times and she loved to taunt Tommy.
Sometimes she landed on his head and gently pulled on his ear, or gave him
a little nip to remind the feline that SHE was the boss . She used to fly
away to the top of the curtain rods and say, "Ha, Ha, you can't catch me".
Rosie certainly established a pecking order.
Update: Rosie went to live with friends when we moved from CT to FL in May
1998. She now has a dog named "Amy" for a roommate -- my godson's
dog. (And Tommy is now an adult cat).
Zachary is a dolphin I met in Marathon,
Florida, while spending some time in the beautiful Florida Keys. He used to
live in one of those "swim with the dolphins" attractions that they used to
have in the Keys. When the Humane Society decided this was not so humane,
as some of the dolphins were catching illnesses from the humans, Zachary was
set free. Now he lives near my friend's house in Marathon, Florida. Zachary
makes an appearance at the house a couple times a month.
Starz is a native Floridian, born in March
of 1998. We got her after we moved to Florida from the local Humane Society,
she was just a baby then. She has many shades of beige and brown splashed
all over her long & fluffy fur. She likes to fetch and thinks she is a dog.
Starz follows me everywhere.
Tommy as a youngster--> Now at 4 years old he is a muscular 12
pounds. A big guy who sleeps a lot all day and likes to be noisy at night.
Starz is an angel, never does anything wrong, she just wants to play with
her string-toy and be a lap cat. She often sleeps on her back and then we
think she looks like a manatee. Hmm, do I have a favorite feline?
Starz picture.. she
is camera shy... from July 2001.
