Microsoft has under extreme public pressure decided to come out with an
open-source version of Windows '98
in 2002. Gates has given the go-ahead to '98 Product Manager Steve
Backenforth who has complained in an internal memo (recently leaked
out), that it is almost impossible to guise the OS crashes, GPF's and
delays that are part of their strategy to get users to upgrade their
software. Steve, it is rumored, has resigned in "utter and deep
frustration". It is said that among other causes he pointed at
Microsoft's inability to foresee the open-source trend, Gate's abusive
behavior and his refusal to listen to subordinates, and the increasing
loss of the Window's market to Linux. . "Currently he (Bill) is only
interested in changing his greedy image by throwing spare money at
various foundations and causes.", he said.
